How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have your Iowa title, not current tags
For donation, what we need is a valid Iowa title in your name. The registration can be expired or lapsed; that’s usually fine. Grab your title from wherever you keep important papers. If there’s a lien listed that’s already paid off, we’ll explain what you may need from the lender before pickup.
2. Tell us about your car with expired registration
Call or complete our online form in a few minutes. Let us know the year, make, model, where the car is located in Iowa, and that the registration is expired. Whether it’s in West Des Moines, Coralville, or rural Benton County, we’ll confirm that we can accept it and answer any questions about tags, fees, or paperwork.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere in Iowa
You don’t have to drive the car to us. We arrange a professional tow truck to pick up your vehicle at no cost, even if it won’t start or hasn’t been registered in years. We’ll coordinate a convenient time, whether your car is at an apartment in Ames, a shop in Waterloo, or a farm outside Ottumwa.
4. Sign the title correctly at pickup
At tow time, you’ll sign the Iowa title over to Heartland Wheels following simple instructions we provide. The tow driver will confirm you’ve completed your part. Once the title is signed and the car is on the truck, responsibility shifts to us and our partners—not you—even though the tags were expired.
5. Notify the Iowa DOT/County and keep your records
After pickup, we recommend you notify your County Treasurer or the Iowa DOT that you’ve donated the vehicle. This helps ensure you’re not tied to future tickets or taxes. Keep your copy of the title transfer and the tow receipt with your tax records for extra peace of mind.
6. Receive your tax receipt from Heartland Wheels

Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name, or still in a prior owner’s name
Tip: If the Iowa title is still in someone else’s name, we’ll likely need it properly signed over to you first. Inherited or gifted cars may require extra steps. Check the front and back of the title before calling so we can walk you through what the county might ask for.
Active lien still listed on the Iowa title
Tip: If a bank or credit union is listed as lienholder and the loan isn’t clearly released, donation may be delayed. Often, you just need a simple lien release letter or stamp. Contact the lender or the County Treasurer, then we can proceed once the title shows the lien as satisfied.
